Why In News?

Microsoft India’s MS Translator software has now included the Kashmiri language.

About Kashmiri 

  • It is spoken throughout the valley of Kashmir and the adjacent highlands.
  • Kashmiri vocabulary combines Dardic, Sanskrit, Punjabi, and Persian elements.
  • In 2020, the Union government passed the Jammu and Kashmir Official Languages Bill, which included Kashmiri among the Union Territory’s official languages.

Scenario in J&K

  • Prior to Independence, the Dogra kingdom in Kashmir established Urdu as the national language.
  • After 1947, Kashmiri was introduced as a topic until the primary level, but was later removed in 1955.
  • It was reintroduced in basic schools in Kashmir in 2001.
  • In 2008, Kashmiri was introduced as an optional undergraduate subject.

The Eighth Schedule to the Constitution consists of the following 22 Languages:- Assamese,  Bengali,  Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada,  Kashmiri, Konkani,  Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Sindhi,  Tamil, Telugu, Urdu  Bodo, Santhali, Maithili and Dogri.

Of these languages, 14 were initially included in the Constitution. Sindhi language was added in 1967.  Thereafter three more languages viz Konkani, Manipuri and Nepali were included in 1992. Subsequently Bodo, Dogri, Maithili and Santhali were added in 2004.
